Hazelnut Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies Recipe

choc-chip-hazelnut-oatmeal

These are yum and easy and the first thing i’ve written into my Old Book Hides Handbound Hardback Journal! 2013 is pretty good so far :)

Ingredients:
3 eggs, well beaten
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 cup butter
¾ cup white sugar
¾ cup brown sugar
2½ cups self raising or plain flour (depending on if you want them flat or pouffy)
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups of oatmeal (or porridge oats)
Chopped hazelnuts
Chocolate chips

1. Combine the eggs with the vanilla essence and set aside. If you wanna replace the chocolate chips and hazelnuts with raisins instead pop them in with the eggs and vanilla too.

2. Cream the butter and sugar together

3. Add in the flour and salt and mix it all together

4. Blend in the eggs, chopped hazelnuts and chocolate chips

5. Roll into balls and flatten slightly before popping in the oven

6. Bake at oven preheated to 180degrees celsius for 10-12 mins

7. Put on a rack to air out for a bit

8. Share with friends

Best Places To Eat in Dublin – La Dolce Vita

Best Places To Eat Dublin - La Dolce Vita, Restaurant and Wine Bar

The Queen of Tarts in Dublin, which has two locations, has become famous for their good food, amazing cakes, beautiful atmosphere and sweet atmosphere. But next door the the Cow’s Lane Queen of Tarts is an inconspicuous looking restaurant called La Dolce Vita. There is nothing striking about it’s exterior next to the bright red busy-ness of Queen of Tarts, but as soon as you walk in the door it smells like great Italian cheese and home and it’s laid back, the staff are chilled out in a way that makes you feel totally at home there and you will wonder how you weren’t always here.

Things To Do in Ireland: Day Trip to Kilkenny

Things to do Ireland, Day Trip to Kilkenny

Kilkenny is one of Ireland’s oldest cities and thus settled comfortable home to culture, history and a great arts scene. It is definitely more a crafts arts scene than a contemporary arts scene but it has it’s moments for that too, especially at the Kikenny Arts Festival which runs every August and is well worth checking out. (Bring / borrow / rent a car if you’re going to this as there’s usually stuff all over Kilkenny county as well as in the town centre and it can be a great adventure.)

Badger & Dodo – Loyalty Coffee

Badger & Dodo Coffee Roasters & Barista Training - image of take away coffee cup with Badger and Dodo Logo

My sister came home laughing but very disappointed last week after attempting to order a flat white somewhere.

“A flat white….?”, was the response to her order, wondering what it was that she wanted flat and white. A table? A plate? She didn’t order a coffee here, knowing that if they didn’t even know what it was, there was no way they were going to get it right.

The Origin of Birthday Candles – A Guest Post by Leah Carri

The Origin of Birthday Candles - photo of lit birthday candles on cake

The Origin of Birthday Candles

It’s funny how we just go along with traditions isn’t it?  There are so many things that we do that we’ve never really given much thought to “why?”, especially when it’s something that we’ve done all our lives.  And something that everyone else we know does too.   We do it because, well, because, that’s just what you do -like birthday candles.  The Germans invented them – did you know that?  No, me neither, I just learnt it off Wikipedia.  I imagine it was an enthusiastic father who was a bit of an arsonist who came up with the idea.  Yeah.  Think about it.

The following would have been in German, obviously.

Irish Brown Bread Scone Recipe by Debbie

Irish Brown Bread Scone Recipe - image of freshly baked scones and cups of tea

Yesterday evening i sat in a sitting room filled with the smell of laundry drying and brown bread scones baking. It must have been the warmest, loveliest combination of smells. Made more all the more lovely by Debbie (who made them) giving one to Mikey Fleming Likes This to take home with him on his cycle home. And all this after we had all sat out in the last of the sun and listened to Leonard Cohen and drank beer (fake beer for me) and chatted. Pretty great for a tuesday. So Debbie kindly shared the recipe. I was asked if i’d like “The Debbie makey-upey one or the ready mix one?”

Gluten Free Lemon & Poppyseed Tea Cake

Gluten Free Lemon and Poppyseed Tea Cake

I had the pleasure of chomping through this at a friend’s house and was kind of shocked that it was good. It’s gluten free and i associate that phrase with people who look like they’re having less fun than those of us eating all the gluten.
